Yellowjackets take advantage of miscues to top Green Knights
On a crisp Friday night, that featured some hard-hitting, Newark capitalized on a few opportunities turning them into points as they overcame a tough Mount Pleasant team 17-3. The Yellowjackets made the most out of turnovers and field position to shut down the Green Knight offense. After falling behind 3-0 late in the first quarter it was all Newark from there. The Yellowjackets tied the game on their next possession after senior kicker #88 Zach Dakin booted a 27-yard field goal. Forcing a Green Knight fumble with 2:43 left in the first half, Newark went ahead 10-3. Using the battering-ram of a RB they have in junior #26, Dequan Woods, the Yellowjackets slowly wore down Mount Pleasant. The husky half-back rumbled in for the TD from 6 yards out and after the extra-point was good Newark went into halftime with a seven point lead.
Mount Pleasant playing without starting QB, senior #7 JaShawn Johnson couldn’t muster any offense in either half. The Yellowjacket defense constantly harassed fill-in QB, senior #4 Sean Carroll. Completely shutting down the run and bottling-up any passing game the Green Knight offense provided Newark never relinquished the lead. The effort that Mount Pleasant QB, #4 Carroll put forth was admirable considering the pounding he was taking while also playing LB on defense. Pinned down on their own 2-yard line, the Yellowjacket defense forced another fumble in the end zone. Senior LB, #24 Brian Sutton quickly hoped on for the TD. The extra point kick was successful and the 17-3 score would go on to be the final tally. Both Flight-A teams are 1-1 entering next week.
