Raiders pull away from Buccaneers in 4th quarter

Battling the heat and a formidable opponent the Concord High football team was able to fend off both Saturday morning.  Division I’s third ranked team used a tough ground attack, stingy run defense and a timely special teams play to finally put away Division II’s third ranked team, Caravel Academy 30-19.  The Raiders started fast as junior RB, #6 Grahmn “Bam” Roberts took a hand-off on the first play 77 yards for the TD.  The extra point was good and it was 7-0 less than 25 seconds into the game.  Caravel tied the game soon after when senior QB #1, Alex Barker threw a 59-yard bomb to junior WR #7, Mandela Montgomery for the long TD.  Concord quickly took the lead back 14-7 when their QB, junior #8 Dillon Coughenour lofted an 18-yard TD pass in the back corner of the end zone to senior WR, #15 Jared Hill.  Once again the Buccaneers responded with a TD, QB #1 Barker connected with junior WR #6 Noah Taylor for a 25-yard score.  The extra point was blocked and Concord held a one-point lead 14-13 early in the second quarter.  The Raiders HB #6, Bam Roberts powered his way through the Buccaneers defense rumbling 62 yards before being stopped.  On the following play he scored from 12 yards out to give Concord a 21-13 lead after the extra point was successful.

A short punt gave Caravel great field position which they took advantage of when their QB #1, Barker dropped back and found WR #7, Montgomery for the second time.  img_4925-2This TD pass was a 20-yarder, the two-point conversion was denied and the score was 21-19, Raiders still in the lead.  With the way Caravel responded repeatedly it was hard to predict that 19 was all they would finish with.  Three minutes into the fourth quarter Barker, the senior QB who had been playing very well up to that point went down with a serious ankle injury.  The ambulance was called and he was carted off the field.  It was a show of class when the entire Concord football team, coaching staff and cheerleading squad came over to the injured Caravel QB to wish him good luck.  With Concord still leading by a slim two-points, Caravel special teams made a mistake.  The long snapper missed the punter and the ball shot into the end zone for a safety.  The ensuing safety kickoff was returned by senior KR, #21 Kyle Batch 80 yards for the TD.  It was a 9 point swing that put the game out of reach for Caravel.  The Raiders now led 30-19 with 5 minutes left to play and would go on to win by the same score.
